Music has been called the greatest human creation throughout history. The fundamental definition of music is pure and unadulterated creativity. What’s more, music creates social cohesion, it speaks to all when words can fail, and wherever you go in the world, it is understood. Music is a universal gift and its power to connect people is without question. It is an art form with human interaction at its center.
As humans, we have the burning desire to create and the interaction with sound is unavoidable, either to make it or take pleasure in it. Instinctually, intuitively, we know that music makes life better. For millennia, we have used it to soothe our souls and comfort pain. The truth is that music serves a greater purpose in our lives than simply providing amusement!
In that sense, Olivia Bird is a rhythm and blues singer/songwriter and a vocal producer. She also co-owns an independent label, called From the Muscle Music Group. Her love affair with music began many years ago, when Olivia was only 5 years old. As soon as she picked up a microphone for the first time, she knew she didn’t want to do anything else in life. Then, Olivia became a poetry writer at the age of 8 and started singing in school choirs and the choir at church. “I realized that music was my happy place where I could be me without any limits”, she shares.
But then everything changed. Olivia was involved in a domestic violence relationship and eventual marriage that was mentally, physically, and emotionally abusive, as she describes it. Despite living in very difficult times, she never lost her love for music.
“Throughout those years we were professionally recording and writing together and I learned how to record myself, as well as build my knowledge of the music industry. I fell in love with the business of music as much as I loved to sing”, Olivia explains.
Her marriage ended in 2018 and currently Olivia has a new partner, with whom she had a beautiful daughter named Lyric. “I named my daughter like that because she was my forever song. I needed her to know that every day of her life”, she adds.
In June 2020 Olivia released music for the first time and she proved herself and to everyone that her passion isn’t just a hobby: it is her life purpose. This led her to getting her Bachelor’s in Entertainment Business in 2022.
She created the label From the Muscle Music Group in order to hold onto her publishing and to also help with artist development and management. It has always been important for her to help artists protect their creativity, so that when they step on stage to do their job they can do so with a clear mind.
“My motivation came from knowing that it’s easy for someone to steal what you worked hard for if you don’t protect it properly. No matter where you go or who you work for, there are going to be protections for that company and persons. I have always been a person to stand up for others and fight for my rights and freedoms, so I incorporated that in pursuing my passions”, Olivia details.
On April 7th she released a new single called “Peace” that will also be on her new EP titled “Won’t Break Me” releasing on May 19th. But that’s not all! She also will be releasing a book and a domestic violence short film in October to celebrate her freedom date. In addition, Olivia plans to release a meditation album after she completes her yoga teacher certification in September and to start a music program that will support in the grounding of music to children by engaging them in play through music.
“Being a domestic violence survivor has instilled in me the strength to never give up on myself. I’ve also learned the value in loving myself and choosing my peace and happiness before I can give it to anyone else. Every experience I have gone through in my life has been achieved through music. Music saved my sanity and I want my music to provide that for other people who are going through similar things. I don’t want women and young girls to feel as lonely as I did, they need to know they can make it out. I was blessed to make it out and it’s my duty to help others make it out”, Olivia concludes.
Without a doubt, her story is a source of hard work and inspiration not only to musicians and artists, but to all of us. To find out more about her work, click here. You can also follow Olivia on Instagram here.
